Exciting three-year-old Thorn Pass will line up in the 2400 metre Group 1 New Zealand Derby worth $750,000 this Saturday. The race has been his main goal for the season and he goes into the race on the up.
Although unplaced in his last start in the 2100 metre Avondale Guineas, the Go Racing team took a lot from his performance there. Says Racing Manager, Albert Bosma, “While it looked disappointing on paper, it was a slow run race and impossible to make ground. He was doing his best work in the last 100 metres and jockey Danielle Johnson was impressed with him. The extra distance in the Derby should suit him well and any rain will not be a problem.”
He is a big, long-striding horse and blinkers will go on him for the Derby which will be a significant gear change.
Thorn Pass is by the champion stallion, the late Thorn Park, who left previous Derby winner, Jimmy Choux, and New Zealand Horse of the Year, Ocean Park, who won five Group Ones, including the Cox Plate (2040m).
