This weekend sees a twin pronged attack for two of Go Racing’s high quality three-year-olds, Charlestown and Thorn Pass, in black type races.
Thorn Pass lines up in the $100,000 Group 2 Avondale Guineas at Ellerslie on Saturday over 2100 metres. An impressive winner of a strong three-year-old race two starts ago, he has not raced since his good 7th placing in the Group 1 Levin Classic where he made excellent ground over 1600 metres. He meets another strong field of three year olds tomorrow with leading jockey Danielle Johnson taking the mount.
Says Racing Manager Albert Bosma, “It is his first look at Ellerslie and is an ideal lead-up to The Derby for him. He has drawn wide so will need a lot of luck to go his way, but the step up to 2100 metres should suit him.”
After an unlucky 3rd in the Dunedin Guineas, Charlestown will race at Invercargill on Saturday in the Listed $50,000 Southland Guineas.
Says Albert, “He has stepped up a gear since we put the blinkers on him and we expect another forward showing from him tomorrow. He has been competitive in group and listed races throughout his career and it would be fitting to see him snare one.”
