Skyman closes in on $1 million

Go Racing’s Skyman is nearing $1 million in stakes following his win in Listed Tails Stakes (1615m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Second up and ridden by James Orman, Skyman began nicely from barrier two and settled in midfield with cover where he switched off and travelled well.

James peeled him out three-wide on the bend and once he balanced up, he pulled away to score an impressive win.

“He got a lovely run in the third pair one of the fence,” James said. “The tempo was pretty good, he was in a lovely rhythm and it took him a couple of strides to pick up under the deep weight (60kg) but once he did, he put them away really well and he was far too good.”

Trainer Chris Waller said the seven-year-old would next target the Gr.2 AD Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Sunshine Coast on May 6 with the Doomben Cup (2100m) on May 20 a further possibility.

“He’s come back super and he still has an electric turn of foot,” Albert said.

“While he is seven, he’s northern hemisphere bred so he doesn’t actually turn eight until January 1.”

Skyman was purchased by Go Racing out of the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in England to race in Australia.

He has now won nine and placed in nine of his 36 starts and has earned NZ$930,000 in stakes. Four of his wins have been at stakes level in the Listed McKeel Cup (2000m), Listed Rowley Mile (1600m), Listed Bernborough (1600m) and his latest victory.

“He’s very close to being a million-dollar horse and not many horses win multiple stakes races and get up to 10 wins so he’s a wonderful racehorse and he’s been a great flag-bearer for what we do in Europe,” Albert said.
