Trans-Tasman stakes double for Go Racing

Trans-Tasman stakes double for Go Racing

Saturday was a red-letter day for Go Racing, with stakes winners on both sides of the Tasman.

Last season’s Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) winner Sentimental Miss was the first in the winners’ circle, after a quality staying performance in Listed Steelform Roofing Group Wanganui Cup (2040m).

The Lisa Latta-trained four-year-old was given a perfect run on the fence in midfield by rider Kozzi Asano, Sentimental Miss moved into contention turning for home before driving to the front at the 200m to defeat Hunta Pence and fast finishing stablemate Platinum Invador.

Less than three hours later it was another horse sporting the familiar Go Racing colours to Listed success when European import Alward won the ATC Cup at Rosehill.

Returning to Sydney from Chris Waller’s Gold Coast Stable, Alward backed up his win at Doomben three-weeks ago with a tough victory over his pet distance of 2000 metres.

“He found winning form in Queensland and has come down in great condition,” Waller said.

“The change of scenery for the horses just keeps them interested and Hugh Bowman gave him a beautiful ride.”

Bowman deserved high praise for the ride, which saw him camped off the pace before taking control in the straight to beat stablemate Black On Gold.

The seven-year-old gelded son of Aqlaam was purchased by Guy Mulcaster for Go Racing from the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale for just NZ$130k landed in Australia and he’s now won over A$600,000.

Waller said Alward’s next start would likely be the Summer Cup (2000m) on Boxing Day.

Sentimental Miss had been scheduled to head to the spelling paddock for a brief break before a planned autumn campaign but that could now be put on hold.

“The way she really hit the line so well might mean we have to take another look at that as she really let down and it was a very good win,” racing manager Matt Allnutt said.

“The signs were there after her last run that she might be on the way back and that was certainly the case.

“She does go best at this time of the year but to see the way she picked them up so comfortably in the run home was just fantastic and a big thrill.”

Bred by The Oaks Stud, Sentimental Miss is by Westbury Stud-based sire Reliable Man. She has now won three of her 17 starts after she was purchased by Go Racing for $40,000 from the 2017 Select Yearling Sale.

The two stakes wins capped off a phenomenal November for Go Racing with a total of 12 wins spread across their 5 trainers and Australasia.
