Go Racing has quality European stayer Alward contesting the 2400 metres A$750,000 Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick on Saturday.
It’s the biggest race of his short but very successful Australian career since being imported less than two years ago.
Says Albert, “We bought him for Chris Waller from the Horses in Training Sale in Newmarket, England. He was landed for just NZ$130,000 and hit the ground running. He has won NZ$400,000 to date. And now gets his opportunity in in a Group One. This is what it’s all about!”
He has drawn barrier 1 and Kathy O’Hara, who previously rode him to third place in the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury in August, will ride at just 50.5 kilos.
Says Albert, “We think 2000 to 2400 metres is his best distance. He has placed at black type level at 2400 metres twice before. His rock star barrier draw means he won’t be covering an inch more ground than he needs to and he has had a significant drop in weight since his last start in the Kingston Town Stakes at 55 kilos. There’s a lot in his favour to have a decent crack at this race.”
Trainer Chris Waller agree he’s going well this campaign and, although only third up, is grounded in plenty of fitness work.
Says Albert, “We look forward to Alward working his magic in the Metropolitan on Saturday.”
