Impressive imported stayer Alward is back.
He races in the listed Lord Mayor’s Cup worth A$150,000 run over 2000 metres at his home track Rosehill, in Sydney on Saturday.
Says leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller, “We backed off him a bit after the Chairman’s Handicap. We learned that he doesn’t stay past 2400 metres so we’ve re-set his campaign accordingly. He is being aimed at the A$300,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup on the 9th of June over 2200 metres.”
The Lord Mayor’s Cup will be one of two lead up races for the former French stayer.
Says Racing Manager Albert Bosma “He’s just so impressive over the distance that he should be hard to beat, even with his awkward barrier draw of nine. From his last six starts over 2200 metres he’s had five wins and a second. And he has a nice weight of 55 kilos. The bookmakers have it as a three horse race with him the 3rd favourite, so it should be an exciting contest.
Alward trialled last week just to keep him up to the mark and Chris is happy he is on target and hopeful that the good weather in Sydney continues. “The track is a soft five at the moment and he is definitely better on a good surface so we want any rain to stay away.”
