Sophie's Choice in tribute race to Sir Colin Meads

Go Racing filly Sophie’s Choice will compete at Hastings on Saturday in race dedicated to the late Sir Colin Meads.

Race five on the card will be known as the El Roca Sir Colin Meads Trophy.

The three-year-old filly, part owned by Sir Colin and Lady Meads, will race in the Cancer Society colours and will wear saddlecloth 5 which was Sir Colin’s playing number.

Sir Colin and Lady Verna Meads owned several multiple stakes winners and were part owners of Group 1 winning filly Ruud Awakening – champion two year old and winner of New Zealand’s richest race – the Karaka Million.

“He and Lady Verna certainly knew how to pick them. He was still investing in his passion and buying horses right until the end. This filly is from last year’s crop and my daughter Sophie’s favourite yearling at Karaka. Sir Colin was generous to the end giving her naming rights. The race in his honour is a fitting tribute to a great man who loved his racing. We will miss him,” says Albert Bosma, Racing Manager.

Sir Colin Meads died of pancreatic cancer on 20th of August.
