It’s a new season and we wish all our horses a very happy birthday as they officially turn a year older. Some of the fillies weren’t too happy and didn’t want to admit their age, particularly Grandma North and South who turned eight!
Spring racing is just around the corner and we are excited to have three Go Racing runners – No More Tears, Mighty Solomon and North And South – in the first major stakes race of the season, the Group 2 Lisa Chittick Foxbridge Plate worth $100,000 on the 19th of August.
No More Tears ran second in the race last year and is peaking nicely for another tilt at the Plate. Marsh Racing Foreman Rhys Middleton was impressed with her trial lastTuesday. “She ran enormous and is right where we want her to be. She feels as good as she ever has under saddle and will be very competitive. She prefers a dead or slow track which is likely.”
Mighty Solomon is a consistently good horse and has a good record over the race distance of 1200 metres. Trainer Lisa Latta says, “He came sixth in the Telegraph last year with a big finish and this shows his calibre. He is trialling tomorrow at Waverley and we are expecting good things of him fresh up. He wants it good to just slow to show his best”
Finally, the grand old lady North and South is in her last campaign before becoming a broodmare – and she likes it the wetter the better – slow and heavy. Says Lisa, “She won a Stakes race in November beating Group 1 winner Start Wondering who will be named New Zealand champion sprinter of the season. She has a lot of class and it would be great for her to go out on a high.”
Racing Manager Albert Bosma is excited. “We are going into the race very happy with all of our runners and they are flying under the radar. It is exciting to have three runners in the race, but to have all preferred track conditions covered too, is a bonus. Mark Chittick and the team at Waikato Stud are great supporters of ours and we are proud to be competing in the race that bears Lisa’s name.”
