(Almost) Stealing the story at New Zealand Derby

Savabeel colt, What’s the Story, staged a smoking attack on the line in the prestigious New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on Saturday narrowly missing by a short head to winner, Rangipo.

Having been checked in the straight on the first round, the Savabeel x Tall Story colt had a lot of ground to make up which he did in outstanding fashion storming up on the rail making up 8 lengths.

Given his rating going into the race, it was an unprecedented performance in the Derby by a talented colt on a sharp rise.

Trainer Stephen McKee was desperately unlucky to miss out on the Karaka Million/ NZ Derby double this year.

Says Stephen, “He’s an outstanding stayer in the making with a tremendous turn of foot at the line. He came so close and has pulled up brilliantly. If anything he looks better than before he raced.”

Says Racing Manager Albert Bosma, “We are so impressed with him. He was purchased for just $80,000 from Fairdale Stud at the Karaka yearling sales and, as I understand it, he’s the only Group 1 placed Savabeel colt. It was just so close on the day. We had a lot of owners on course who enjoyed every minute but obviously would have preferred the result just one stride after the line!”

His next target is the $2 million Australian Derby in Sydney on 2 April.
