Go Racing southern stayer, Sadlers Rock, produced a thrilling run in the Queenstown Cup storming from the back of the field and just getting pipped at the post.
From a wide draw he started awkwardly so regular rider (and an excellent judge of speed) David Walsh had a change of plans and rode him quietly at the back getting a feel for the pace. When the field slowed up, Sadlers Rock showed an incredible turn of foot to loop the entire field three wide and take the lead from Ya Dreamin Jonesy.
They battled it out for a photo finish with Sadlers Rock just beaten by a bob of the head. Race favourite, She Insatiable, took the bronze position.
Says Racing Manager Albert Bosma, “It was such an impressive and thrilling ride. He is obviously able to apply pressure from quite a distance out. Unfortunately he probably used up a little too much energy early on and with a better barrier draw he would have won. He must be close to another win soon.”
Sadlers Rock will remain on the southern circuit where there are some good races for him before looking to bring him up for the Wellington Cup meeting.
Says Albert, “It makes sense for him to race where the money is. As long as it’s not Riccarton. For some reason he’s got a bias against that track and hasn’t performed well there.”
