Group One performed Mighty Solomon kicks off his spring campaign at Hastings this Saturday.

Third in the Group One Thorndon Mile earlier this year, he was initially aimed at the Triple Crown in Hawkes Bay but on failing to make the field for the first leg, the Makfi Stakes, trainer Lisa Latta looked at other options.

“He will run at Hawkes Bay in the Open 1200 metres worth $40,000. It is a race that has drawn a Group 1 quality field – the likes of Ryan Mark who ran second in the Makfi, dual Group One winner Recite, and Railway Handicap winner In Style.  He’s certainly in good company and it will be a big challenge,” Lisa says.

Following this race he will run in the $70,000 Group Three Linwood Park Sprint again at Hastings on the 3rd of October.

“He’s been nominated for the Group Two Couplands Mile at Riccarton Park on 11 November worth $230,000 but we’ll pause and consider further spring options at that stage,” says Lisa.

Go Racing Manager Albert Bosma notes that he has an excellent record at Hastings “He has raced there twice and won at both starts, so he likes the course. He will have to be good this weekend though as he will carry top weight against a star studded line up.”

“We are proud of the horse as last season Mighty Solomon notched up the most wins under the Go Racing colours with five, including beating Makfi Stakes winner Kawi at Trentham last December. We believe he will be competitive in Group One races this season.”

Jonathon Riddell who has partnered him regularly throughout his career takes the mount on Saturday.
