Rod the god

It was a case of “This Time Rodney” as the dam’s name suggested for Silver Rod on Saturday winning the Maiden 1400 metres at Ellerslie carrying a heavy 58 kgs.

By Guillotine, the three-year-old gelding, has had a successful little campaign over the last couple of months.

Says Albert Bosma, “He’s progressed well since his last start second placing. He has been pretty full of himself since his last race and has been more assured and confident in everything he has done since. He definitely benefitted from his previous experience at Ellerslie, which can be a tricky track.”

“He’s such a big lumbering horse that he takes a long time to wind up. But when he does he’s unstoppable.”

Regular jockey Michael McNab also made the most of drawing well at number three and the small field of seven horses.

With trainer Stephen Marsh down the line at Awapuni with Seize the Moment, it was up to Albert and son Dougie to do the honours at Ellerslie.

Says Albert, “Stephen advised Doug to put all his $7 pocket money on the nose to win. Doug took a more conservative approach with a $3 bet but was happy with his collect. He also bought home the horse rug!”

Say Stephen, “We’re really pleased with Silver Rod’s progress. He’s loving the game now he’s had a taste of success. He’s such a lovable goof and he’s still got a lot of growing up to do. We are considering sending him to Trentham on 11 April as a trip away would be another step in his education.”
