Big, laid back lad Thorn Pass broke through for the first win of his four-year-old season and the third of his career at Awapuni on Saturday.
A Group 1 competitor as a three-year-old, it was a dominate win over a mile, coming from well back in the hands of usual jockey Robbie Hannam.
“He’s a stayer of some promise,” says Racing Manager Albert Bosma, “and we have a couple of options for him.”
Thorn Pass has been nominated for the Dunstan Stayers Final, which is a Rating 85 race over 2200 metres at Ellerslie on 1 January worth $75,000. Alternatively, he may go to the Wellington Cup meeting rating 85 race worth $40,000 over 2400 metres.
Says Albert, “Either way, we won’t make a call until after his next race which is almost certain to be rating 85, 2000 metres at Awapuni on 20 December worth $30,000. We think he is a Cups horse in the making and he is looking for the step up in ground now.”
