Winter winner

Exciting galloper North and South proved her winter versatility winning a $30,000 Premier Rating 75 event on Saturday in atrocious conditions. The weather was so bad it had been debated whether to call the meeting at Trentham off. It was the fifth win for the four-year-old in her 14-start career.

The win was even more remarkable given she ran against the race pattern of the day – all other winners were handy and she came from the back of the field to win. She was also the only favourite to run in the first three place getters all day.

Says trainer Lisa Latta, “She’s come through the race brilliantly – she hardly blew. One of the things that makes her so good is that while we know she is really good on wet tracks she can also perform on the full range – from heavy to firm.”

Says Racing Manager Matt Allnutt who braved the wet and wintery conditions, “We believe she’s one of the most promising winter gallopers we currently have in New Zealand.”

The next start for North and South will be a step up to stakes company in the Listed Tauranga Classic for fillies and mares worth $50,000 on 21 June. This will be her first right-handed start but Allnutt doesn’t believe it will present any problems.
