Savouring a surprise moment

While not exactly an upset, trainer Stephen Marsh was not expecting Savour the Moment to win on Saturday in the Listed Legacy Lodge Handicap at Te Rapa.

“He’d had ten months off and while we knew he’d come up well we thought 1200 metres was too short for him. He’s only ever won over that distance as a maidener.”

However, with a scorching time of 1.09.01, the Savabeel x Dancing Mistress gelding put paid to that theory and this latest triumph pushes his winnings to over $100,000 with an impressive track record of six wins from 19 starts.

In this, his third win from three starts at Te Rapa, he jumped brilliantly and sat outside the leader. With Alex Forbes on board and riding the best form of his young life with two stakes wins in the last month, he was simply too good for them.

With this bonus win under his belt, Savour the Moment continues towards his target race for this preparation, the Group 1 Thorndon Mile at Wellington on 25 January. Says Go Racing Manager, Albert Bosma, “He’ll only have two more runs before then with his next start on 14 December again at Te Rapa in a listed 1400m race.”
